Give respect where respect is due. That´s what the 2007 Stylus DJ Awards was positioned to do. With awards for everything from Club DJ of the Year to Underground DJ of the Year, the show honoured the oft-forgotten members of the hip-hop conglomerate.
"Whenever we go to the Grammy´s or the American Music Awards, they never honour the DJ, so this right here that y´all have is beautiful," said surprise guest performer Papoose as he closed out his set with Montreal singer Addictiv.
Held at the luxurious Palais Royale ballroom, the event brought out 400 of Canada´s elite patrons to celebrate in the success of the country´s disc jockeys.
The show´s highlights mainly came courtesy of emcees RG and Trixx (of FLOW 93.5), hosts for the evening. The laughter from the audience was definitely not forced. Touching moments were no doubt the inducting of Killowatt Productions sound crew and DJ Len P into the official Stylus DJ Hall of Fame.
What the show could have used more of was time. Several awards were presented one right after the other creating a rushed feel. This was maximized when the award for Reggae DJ of the Year was presented to winner Lindo P without even the nominees being announced. Of course Trixx and RG tried to save the day, but even their hysterical antics couldn´t cover up that blunder.
To close out the show came a grandiose performance from Ottawa´s Belly and his Cali brethren, Kurupt. However, when Belly stepped on stage and no one clapped, he didn´t flinch. The self-proclaimed most hated and most underrated in the game went on to announce, "I´m here to show love to the DJs. If it weren´t for the DJs, I´d be next to the ice watching my Senators."
Sorry Belly, the Sens lost that one.
